Foreign Languages

I am not unique in the fact that I am bilingual. Most of the people I know are bilingual or trilingual. I can speak both Chinese and English, and even though I have taken a few years of French I don't consider myself fluent in it. I respect people who enjoy learning and speaking new languages, even though I personally don't enjoy it. I have traditionally struggled when it comes to learning a new language, I even struggle fantastically when it comes to English. In this blog post I will be discussing how I feel about Foreign Languages. Back when I was child, my father decided that I needed to learn Chinese. I absolutely hated it. I had Chinese Sunday School, and memorizing all the individual characters gave me a headache. I tried to learn at first, but after feeling virtually no progress, I gave up. However, despite the fact that I stopped trying to actively learn Chinese, I still became fluent and literate from my occasional trips back to China. Spending even a few weeks in...

The Wheels on the Bus go Clunk Clunk Clunk.(Slight NSFW)

Most public schools have a school bus system. Buses go out before and after school to transport kids to either the school or their home. This is very helpful, especially for families who don't have the time or means to transport their kids to and from school. However, I personally came to hate school buses over time, due to a few years of bad experience. I used to enjoy the bus rides in elementary school, I got to know my bus driver really well, and she often gave us snacks to eat. My bus only had around 8 kids in it, so everyone was friendly with each other. The bus rides home were always quick and fun. For some dumb reason I also thought that riding the yellow bus made me "cool".  My impression of the yellow bus changed dramatically when I entered middle school. I present to you, bus 156. All of my friends who lived in Champaign now got to ride the MTD bus, which I thought was vastly superior to the yellow bus. I, on the other hand, had to ride bus 156. A singu...

Tetris in China.

Image
Everyone knows the classic game of Tetris, game pieces of different sizes and shapes come from the top and you attempt to arrange them so they all fit together perfectly. I'm not very good at it, but it's a fun game. You know what is not fun? Tetris in real life. Imagine you're playing Tetris, except all the pieces are cars, and all the cars are on a highway, and the high way is in urban China, and you're playing the game during rush hour. In normal Tetris, if you have a row that is complete, it is cleared and you get points. As much as I want for cars to instantly get deleted and out of my way when they line up next to each other, it just isn't realistic. In China, everyone has a "I must get there first and anyone who gets in my way shall die by my hand" mentality. As a result, all the cars are as close to each other as possible, and swerving is common. Traffic jams are something I hate, it's just a complete waste of my time.  You sit in a ...

A Quick Break - Transfer time.

This blog post is going to be slightly different from all the others. For this, I will be answering a question that has already been asked of me many times. "How's your first quarter at Uni been?" The short answer to this is fine, however most of you already realize that when someone says fine it means that are most definitely not fine, so I'll go into more depth. There are quite a few major differences from Uni and Central that I still have to get accustomed to. The primary one is workload. At central I had daily math homework, weekly science homework, and the occasional essay, which is similar to Uni. The problem here is that the daily math homework and science homework at Central I could finish in probably 10 minutes flat, while at Uni math can sometimes take up to an hour and science is just more complicated in general. With the workload, came a lot of extra time to manage it, which I am slowly getting used to. I never had free periods or study halls before ...

Lunchtime

Public school lunch, also known as prison food, is a mystery of the universe. US school lunches were intended to provide students with an option for lunch that didn't require them to bring food from home. At the same time, they were supposed to be healthy and nutritious, fulfilling the "food pyramid" requirements. It is worth noting that these were also cheap and some students got lunch for free as their households couldn't afford food, the goal of this was to make school lunch accessible for all. Lunch, Nutrition, and Accessibility. These were the factors considered to create the perfect school lunch. But the US government accidently forgot to consider another factor, Underfunding. Thus, the Prison lunch was created. Using their ultra super powers, Preservatives, Frozen food, and the Lunch Lady, the Public lunch system has dedicated their lives to serving "food" and poisoning kids.  When schools must serve healthy food that fit the food pyram...

The Tale of Vicious Vicky

Over the summer, I got a job teaching English to underprivileged children in rural China through a program called Chinaway. At first I thought I was going to be teaching high schoolers in Dujiangyan (A famous beautiful city with the worlds first dam), little did I know I got hard scammed by the program and I got put teaching primary school kids in Ya'an, a not-as-beautiful-as-Dujiangyan-but-a-lot-rainier city.  At first I thought I would be teaching at a local elementary school, but instead it was at a local academy of art and talent. I also found out that all my students were going to voluntary, which I assumed was good. If they came voluntarily, it means they would be willing to learn right? Apparently I was wrong, for voluntary also means "My parents saw this as an opportunity to learn and forced me to come even though my normal school already ended so I will be petty and annoying". 1st day of teaching: I got a fair amount of students, around 16-20 depen...

Central, Uni, and the best place on earth.

Highschool bathrooms. (Please note this is for boys bathroom only as I have never had a good experience walking into the girls bathroom) Highschool bathrooms are the things of nightmares. The very thought of them disgusts me and most likely you as well unless you are some type of humanoid fly. How any human could find these deathtraps utilities appealing is beyond me, and I feel especially sorry for the janitors who have to clean them every day. I too would go bald and have gray hair if I had to deal with the, ahem, creativity of high schoolers every day. Let me start by talking about the situation of bathrooms while I was at central. The first floor bathroom was actually decent, it only smelled like socks after a day of running (Which was really good compared to shall we say, the 3rd floor bathroom which I will get to later). It was clean... ish, depends on your definition of clean, but since the toilets weren't covered in human excretion, it might as well be the cleane...
